You cannot see Mercury during most of the day because the sky is too bright and it always appears close to the Sun. It can usually be seen as an evening star (shortly after sunset) or morning star (shortly before sunrise).

The planet itself experiences solar daytimes that are 88 Earth days long, so the airless surface is heated to more than 430° Celsius. Once the rotation carries an area into its 88 day night, the temperature plummets to -170°C.
