Michigan was taken from a Native American Word i believe spelt like "Michiganna" or similar. It means either "Great Lakes" or "Big Lake", If i remember right it was named this by the Ottawa Native Americans. Which lived their for some 10,000 years roughly, as history tells us.

In its Franco-Anglicised version it has no meaning in any language, but it comes originally from the Ojibwe mishi-gamaa meaning big lake. This was not heard or recorded correctly by early French and English explorers (as was the case with most native names).
