.png is a filename extension that stands for Portable Network Graphics. It has the advantages of being a lossless format (as compared to GIF, which stands for Graphical Interchange Format) and that it is not patented, thus allowing anyone to use it without limitation (once again, unlike GIF). Another significant advantage is that PNG allows 24-bit color whereas GIF allows only 8-bit.
