SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. SSL certificates authenticate a website’s identity and encrypt the information visitors enter on the site, preventing thieves from “overhearing” any exchange between the website and another computer. When you browse a website on your cell phone, an SSL certificate keeps the information you exchange with the website safe.
