Matt.5:5 - "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth".

1. Blessed means happy, favoured, etc. of God.

2. Meek doesn't mean weakness. It is a matter of being humble. Meekness is the opposite to self-assertiveness. Its the spirit of accepting God's dealings with us, not disputing about it and trusting He is in control.

3. Inherit the earth - When Jesus returns there will be a 1000 year period (known as the Millennium) when we will live on the earth, before He creates a new Heaven and a new Earth. Jesus states that His people will inherit the earth where we will reign and rule over the earth with Him. God created and all things including the earth are His. We will inherit the right to reign and rule with Him.

Matthew 25:24 says ...."The King will say to them on His right hand, Come, ye blessed of My Father, INHERIT the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.... " Here Jesus refers to the Kingdom of Heaven that His people will inherit.

Today, the world would say Blessed are the STRONG, the famous, the go-getters, etc., but God wants meekness, those who will humble themselves before God and let go of themselves and let God have His way in their lives. Those who are arrogant, self-assertive, dictatorial, these are not looking to God, they're looking to themselves and these attitudes are self promoting, certainly not looking humbly or meekly to God. A humble person doesn't need to stress when adverse situations arise, they can humbly acknowledge that God knows what's happening, He's not shocked and will turn things around for the ultimate good of that person.

"Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men." (Matt.5:13 KJV)

Same verse [WEY] Weymouth's New Testament: "You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has become tasteless, in what way can it regain its saltiness? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown away and trodden on by the passers by."

[WNT] William's New Testament: "'You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its strength, what can make it salt again? It is good for nothing but to be thrown away and trodden under foot.'"

Matthew Henry says:

"...Ye are the salt of the earth. Mankind, lying in ignorance and wickedness, were as a vast heap, ready to putrify; but Christ sent forth His disciples, by their lives and doctrines to season it with Knowledge and Grace. If they are not such as they should be, they are as salt that has lost its savour. If a man can take up the profession of Christ, and yet remain graceless, no other doctrine, no other means, can make him profitable. Our Light must shine, by doing such good works as men may see. What is between God and our souls, must be kept to ourselves; but that which is of itself open to the sight of men, we must study to make suitable to our profession, and praiseworthy. We must aim at the Glory of God." (Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary: Matthew 5; 13-16)

What does Matthew call himself in his gospel?

A:All four New Testament gospels were written anonymously and were not attributed by the Church Fathers to supposed authors until later in the second century. The gospel now known as Matthew's Gospel was attributed to the disciple Matthew because this gospel emphasises the role of Matthew more than any other gospel. This does not mean that the author actually was Matthew, and modern New Testament scholars say that the gospel could not have been written by an eyewitness to the events portrayed, but tradition ever since the second century links the gospel with Matthew.

What does the scripture Matthew twenty-two verse 14 mean?

It's commonly regarded to be a reference to only a minority choosing to believe after the hearing the gospel. For example, the People's New Testament says (after the usual translation, "For many are called, but few are chosen.") "The many called embrace all who hear the gospel; the whole Jewish nation, and the Gentiles of every land where the gospel is preached. The chosen are those who choose to accept."

What do Catholics consider the oldest gospel?

Originally, St. Matthew's Gospel was considered the first Gospel. However, today that status is in question. Matthew is said to have written the Gospel in Hebrew but that text disappeared over time and was lost to history. A Gospel of Matthew in Greek is still extant but it is unknown if this was a translation of the original Hebrew Gospel or was a different version. Matthew's Gospel includes the version written by Mark almost in its entirety so Matthew may have borrowed extensively from Mark's Gospel and added to it from his own personal observations and remembrances. That would mean that Mark is the author of the oldest Gospel.

How many books did Matthew write?

-----------------------The disciple Matthew did not write any books. The book now known as Matthew's Gospel was originally anonymous and was only attributed to the disciple whose name it now bears later in the second century, when the Church Fathers were attempting to establish who probably wrote each of the New Testament gospels. Scholars say that Matthew could not have been written by an eyewitness to the mission of Jesus, not least because it can be shown that the author copied approximately 600 verses from Mark's Gospel and copied substantial sayings material from the hypothetical 'Q' document. For convenience, the unknown author continues to be known as Matthew, but this is not the Matthew portrayed in the gospel.
