Tybalt wrote a letter to Romeo, challenging him to a duel. Tybalt was angry that Romeo had invaded the Capulets' party but he wasn't able to fight him then and there because he had been stopped by Capulet, his uncle.

He receives different messages at different times in the play. At the party he gets the message from the nurse that Juliet is Cauplet's daughter. The next day he gets a message from the nurse that he had better not trifle with Juliet's affection. Later he gets a message from the nurse that Juliet is crying herself sick and would he go to her room please. Finally in Act five he gets a message through Balthazar that Juliet is dead.
