Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day. The armistice ending the hostilities of World War I went into effect at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year 1918. That is why November 11th is deemed the date for this holiday. It was a day to honor all those who had served during WWI, at that time commonly called the Great War. It was first commemorated on November 11, 1919.
November 11, 1918 was not the end of World War I. It did not officially end until the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919. Armistice Day officially became a national holiday in 1938. Armistice Day gradually became referred to as Veterans Day and on June 1, 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, the holiday was renamed as Veterans Day to honor veterans of all wars in which the United States was involved.
