Kangaroo rats are primarily granivores (seed-eaters). They eat seeds from the desert grasses in their habitat. They also eat plant parts such as leaves, stems, buds, some fruit, and many of them eat insects, grubs and larvae. They also need to drink little if any water; the seeds they eat are frequently high in water content, and kangaroo rats can also rely on water produced by their cells (metabolic water) to survive.

However, they are very much smaller than kangaroos, with Giant kangaroo rats having a body length of only 15cm (6 inches). Kangaroo rats are not even remotely related to kangaroos, or rat-kangaroos of Australia.Kangaroo rats are members of the rodent family, not marsupials like kangaroos. They do not need to drink water, obtaining most of their moisture needs from the seeds they eat.
