What does a DVD do?

A DVD decrypter over-rides any Digital Rights Movement (DRM) protection encryption on the DVD. This is a method of controlling access to copyrighted material. By over-riding the DRM, the DVD decrypter will allow copies to be made of an otherwise restricted DVD.

DVDs, CDs, and Laser Discs all work on the same principle. Data is recorded on the discs in the form of "pits". These pits are less reflective of the laser light than the areas of the discs without the pits. When the laser tracks over the disc, (It reads from the inside of the disc to the outside following a spiral like the groves of an old phonograph record) the brighter and darker areas are read as digital 1s and 0s. This data is then processed to obtain the video and audio information that is sent to the TV. In the case of laser discs and CDs, there is only one layer of information and when the laser reaches the outer edge of the disc, the disc is full. DVDs have two layers. The first layer is read from the inside of the disc to the outer edge and then the machine switches to the other layer and it is read from the outside of the disc to the inside. This is a simplistic explanation and does not go into how the tracking is achieved or how the digital data is processed.
