When you get the free pass, it lets you play WoW for ten days without paying. You don't get all the perks of a paid account - you can't use the Auction House, for example - but you can run around and have fun. After ten days, if you have not paid, you cannot use that account. Some people don't mind this, and just keep getting more free accounts, but most people like keeping the same character and improving them.
