You will probable want to get a freshwater aquarium first. And the bigger the tank, the better. I promise. you'll want to start out with at leased a 24 gal. first. get the biggest one you can. Also make sure that you get community fish, not aggressive, or semi-aggressive. It will also depend on if you have soft water, or hard water. If you have soft water, a good fish is a Rosy Barb, or Barbus conchonius, if you want them to breed, if you don't, get some Scissortail Rasboras. If you have hard water and you want them to breed get some Boesman's Rainbow fish (keep in groups), and if you don't want them to breed, get some Red Rainbowfish. You should always have at leased 2-3 fish of each kind of fish you have in your tank. Some fish are shoaling, that means you should keep them in groups of 6 or more, like the Boesman's rainbowfish, or the red Rainbowfish (but for those you could have only 3 if nessesary). You should have 1 in. of fish per U.S. gallon, not including the tail, and for cleanerfish you could have 2 in. of fish per gallon, unless they get over 1', then 1 in. of fish per gal. But the max. you should have in a tank is 1 in. below the gallon, like you can't have 29 in. of fish in a 29 gal. tank. You should always research each species BEFORE you buy it, i have just skimmed over the breefs. Just ask you local pet dealer like PetCo., or PetsMart. They will help you get everything you need, and ask lots as many questions as you can, and if you have any more, call them. They should be able to help you, ask for someone in aquatics.
