White blood cells or leukocytes are cells of the immune system that defend the body from disease- causing germs, bacteria, and viruses. They are called white blood cell simply because they're white.

They are produced in the bone marrow and live between 3 and 4 days. There are five different "species" of white blood cell. Each species is supposed to defend the body against different types of body invaders.

As soon as an unknown enemy gets inside the body, it takes only minutes to be there right at the scene. When one white blood cell detects an invader, it sends chemicals signals to other white blood cell calling for back up. To kill germs, bacteria, or viruses, white blood cells usually "eat" them by enclosing its body around it and destroying it with toxic chemicals produced in their nuclei. Antibodies also help with this job and are produced by a special kind of white blood cell.

Red blood cells are disc- shaped cells. Even though they're called "Red" blood cells, they're actually brown inside the body. When they come in contact with oxygen (usually with you get a cut) then turn red. Their job is to carry oxygenated blood around the body. Red blood cells can actually travel, at maximum, 2 feet in a minute. However, different cells move at different speeds so this may not apply to all red blood cells. If you're wondering how many red blood cells are in the body or how big they are, think of it like this: a single drop of blood contains over a million red blood cells. Meaning, you're whole body could contain quadrillions of blood cells in your body! This is not counting the hundreds of other types of cells in your body!
