∙ 13y agoA blood pressure (BP) of 130/124 means either the machine has a problem, or the person doesn't have a normal BP and is probably going to be in cardiac arrest any time now and needs medical attention ASAP! Furthermore, I think that a BP of 130/124 is highly unlikely.
What does the BP numbers mean?
The number on the top (in this case 130) is the systolic blood pressure and the number on the bottom (in this case 124) is the diastolic blood pressure. The systolic BP is the pressure in the arteries right when the blood is pumped out of the heart, therefore the pressure is bigger. The diastolic BP is the pressure in the arteries after the blood has been pumped out and before the next heart contraction. At this moment, the heart is relaxed and the pressure is much lower.
The optimal BP is 120/80. The high normal or borderline is 140/90. And this is why 130/124 is not normal. It means that the pressure in the person's arteries is constantly high and the aorta (the biggest and most important artery in the body) may rupture, and if it does, the person will have an internal bleed and may die in minutes.
