The captain is responsible for the ship in his command, for its operation and for seeing that all international laws and company policies are obeyed. He is responsible for the security and safety of the ship, and will respond to all threats. He is in charge of the ship's crew and sometimes the accounting, if there is no one else for that job, and everything related to the handling of the ship. He is to keep accurate records and logs and is responsible for the ship's navigation, and managing all cargo and stores on board.
Every morning when the captain awakes and goes to the bridge he takes out a little book. As he faces the front of the ship he reads the first page written in bold letters, "Port is on the left, and Starborard is on the right".
