Cattle eat for about 18hrs a day. So when they are not actively grazing they will lay down to chew their cud. Cud is the regurgitation of forage they have already eaten. Forages are very difficult to digest this is where the cattle's four compartment stomach comes into play. One part of the stomach does the initial digestion and then it is sent back to the mouth for more grinding and compaction.
