In the older days just like in many other cultures dogs represented loyalty and strong kinship. For example Hachiko, the akita inu that waited for his deceased master for 9 years until his own death. You can also see 'komainu' which are guardian dogs based on the Chinese fu dogs. They protect temples, shrine, and homes.

You also have inugami or dog gods from folklore that are generally considered bad luck since they practice black magic/ possess people.

In todays society dogs are generally just seen as pets, and by some play things that can be thrown away when the owner becomes bored of them.
