The hip reducing machine was a long sturdy belt attached to a motor on a pole at hip height which vibrated. The theory was that you shook the fat and it was exercise. Spot reducing was very popular at the time, and these machines were also available in a home model. My grandmother had one, and it was fun to stand on it and shake.

Another one that was popular was a roller contraption that you "sat" on. There were hand holds and the wooden knobby things beat your butt on the theory that the "exercise" would reduce the fat in your rear.
