"Flagging" an e-mail is a tool that is there so that you can mark messages that you feel are important, and want to come back to later. Flagging can be useful for marking things like bank statements and other important documents.

Another good tool for this is folders, which most e-mails support. In folders, you can organize all your e-mails however you like and can go to them nice and easy. And to make things better, you can flag things inside of folders, so that you can find your important documents even faster.

It is for you to use as you wish. Usually, people use it to "flag" messages which are important and need to be followed-up on. This can be especially helpful if your e-mail fills up with newsletters and junk. Flagging messages will make it easier to find the important ones in the mess which you havn't cleaned up yet.
