Perhaps the men in question are seeking a form of security. Men pride themselves as being the "hunters" of the relationship world. However, this is not actually true; it is the woman who actually makes the final decision as to whether or not she will enter into a relationship with any one man. Since men sense this inferior position in the mating game the unconscious portion of their Ego Structure is constantly trying to compensate for it.
You can see from the above discussion that men who keep a woman on the side could be doing so to cover up a basic inadequacy which is too painful for them to confront directly.
