It shows how big the scaling in north and east in numbers to show where something is and somewhere is in numbers to show its with and scale. A map scale is a comparison tool to show the general size of the roads/objects depicted on the map. Depending on the size of the map, the scale would be 100 meters, 10 miles, etc.
