Most medieval farmers were serfs. There is a link below to a description of a serf's home. Some farmers were better off, but the general conditions were pretty much the same, just a little more comfortable.
Travel was limited in the middle ages because the roads were really holey and bumpy. Sometimes farmers ploughed the road and carts couldn't get past. They did not have suspension either so the travel wasnt very comfy and relaxed like it is now a days.
