Diabetes can damage the kidneys, eventually leading to kidney failure. As your body builds up more glucose in the bloodstream the body tries to balance it out and glucose will spill into your urine. Glucose in the urine is not a normal finding, and is an indication of diabetes.

If you go into ketones that reportedly has a smell. Your breath is one way your body removes the ketones (other is urine). I am in ketones all the time because I eat badly presently, I can't smell my breath, my roommate can't but my sister says she does. She's a nurse so maybe that is why.
