Polar bears live on the coastline of the tundra. The tundra is a vast, treeless plain where only small plants can grow because the soil remains frozen year-round just a few inches below the surface. During the cold months, polar bears take the opportunity to travel on the barren, white sea ice that covers the Arctic Ocean. That is when they are able to hunt effectively.
