If you wish to ride, but are too big you could also 'pony' the Shetland from a larger horse. This involves leading the pony by a halter and lead rope as you ride or hack out. A Shetland pony is typically a hardy animal and will do well on sparse grazing or hay with minimal exercise, but it does need to be worked at least every other day to two times a week, even when it does have access to a field.
