Why is it called the rubber policeman?

So I've been reading up on this, as I had the same question...and what I can gather is that isn't any awesome story attached :(. It's called a rubber policeman simply due to the fact that it's a "rubber" attachment to stirring rod, and it "polices" things by keeping them clean and in order. So I suppose they could have called it a rubber policer...but maybe they thought it looked like someone where a helmet too so added a man at the end. But that's the best I can find, enjoy chemistry :).

How do you measure force with a rubber band?

A rubber band will , approximately, stretch an amount "x" in direct proportion to the force "F" applied to it. So you can write this as an equation, F = KX . To find the proportionality constant "K" , hang a known weight "W" from the rubber band and measure the stretch "L". then divide W/L = K . This is called "calibrating" the rubber band.

Do you measure the distance from the pitchers mound to home plate from the back corner of home plate?

You start at the pointy end of home plate and measure 60 feet 6 inches towards second base. That is where you would place the front of the pitcher's rubber. Then from the middle of the pitcher's rubber you measure 18 inches towards home plate and mark that spot. Measure an 18 foot radius around the marked spot. That is the pitcher's mound boundary. To make sure you're correct, you would then measure from the front of the mound to the front of the pitcher's rubber. It should equal 11 feet 6 inches.
