It depends on your experience, how good of a negotiator you are and how many years you have worked for the company. There are two types of district manager positions. One is called DSM for district sales manager and the other is SPDSM, which stands for special projects district manager. The SPDSMs generally make a little more because they get annual reviews as they work full time all year around. After and before Halloween, they are District Managers for Spencer Gifts , the parent company of Spirit Halloween. Another factor in determining the pay of a DSM is where you are actually working. A DSM in New York gets more than a DSM in Mississippi. The range is $1000-1500 per week. You also get mileage if you use your own car, which is very stingy at .40 a mile. Some DSM's are given rental cars because of the size of their district and the distances between their stores. There is also a bonus program which is made by about 65% of the DSMs. Of those managers, very few make 100% of the bonus. The zone managers make it difficult for the DSMs to make the bonus money. The average bonus pay out no matter what you are tol is around $1500. A Zone manager typically will give a manager a low rating so he/she does not have to pay the bonus out of their budget, thus increasing their own bonus pay out, even tho the DSM worked really hard to achieve the numbers necessary for the bonus. Bonus's are held over the heads of DSM's throughout the entire season. An hour does not go by without a phone call or memo threatening the DSM's bonus if a certain task is not completed within specific guidelines. Bonus money is constantly used as a carrot to motivate, but considered to be an unnecessary expense, by the board of directors. DSM's are required to work 7 days a week and up to 18 hours a day. Only one day off is allowed off during the entire Halloween season. Some zone managers do not even allow that. If an employee in your district steals or causes harm to the company, it can be charged off your bonus. If an employee sues the company, DSM's are told in training that they have to hire their own lawyer and appear in court. Very few DSM's return because the zone managers are abusive and do not have proactive, or current industry best practice management skills. There are several DSM's who don't finish the season, as they quit because of abuse and exhaustion. Many DSM's file complaints with state agencies seeking payment for unpaid hours and unfair labor practices.
