Adhesion is the process of something sticking to something else. It doesn't necessarily have to be the same type of thing sticking together.

A simple example of this is glue being the adhered for tissue paper to stick to paper.

Another example is Resin, a traditional natural adhesion used for joining wood.

When water molecules stick to other molecules this is special type of adhesion as it involves polars (Magnetic attraction). Water has a slight charge on both Hydrogen(+) and Oxygen(-) Molecules. This makes them attracted to each other.
