A herbivore eats plants, a carnivore eats flesh and an omnivore can eat both.

Herbivorous animals cannot chew or digest meat. So they eat plants. Many herbivorous animals mostly eat fruits and leaves but some herbivorous animals also eat roots and seeds of the parts of the plants. The diets of some herbivorous animals change with the seasons.

Plants, photosynthesizing bacteria, and algae are what a herbivore might eat.

Specifically, the word herbivore comes from the Latin noun herba for "herb, small plant" and the Latin verb vorare for "to devour, swallow." The term most often is applied to members of the animal kingdom even though there are plant-feeding bacteria, fungi, microbes and plants. Examples of herbivores therefore may be found from such animal classes as amphibians, arthropods, birds, fish, insects and mammals.
