The phrase "the devil's arithmetic" comes from a book of the same name by Jane Yolen. The book describes life inside of a death camp during World War II, and the phrase refers to the little things the main character does to avoid being chosen for the gas chamber.
"You are a name, not a number. Never forget that name, whatever they tell you here. You will always be Chaya--life--to me."

I would suggest going to the “Literature” section of Answers, as “Devil’s Arithmetic” has nothing to do with basic arithmetic (I believe, for I have not read the book).
