An average is a sort of middle number.

There are three kinds of mathematical average and the unqualified word "average" can refer to any of the three:

  • mean
This is the average that most people would understand by the word "average".

It is the sum of the items divided by the number of items.

As such it represents the value each of the items would have if they were all the same value.

  • median
If the items are sorted into order, the median is the value in the middle. (If there are an even number of items, then the mean average of the middle two items).

This is the only average of which it can always be said that half the values are above it and half the values are below it.

  • mode
This is the item, or items, that appears the most often or frequently.

If all the items have different values then there is no mode average.

This is the only average that does not need the items to be numbers, for example, a survey could look at people's favourite chocolate bar - the mode average would indicate that bar which is preferred by most people.

If you increase temperature you increase thermal energy. If you double the amount you have the temperature does not change but the thermal energy does.Temperature and thermal energy are the same since they both use kinetic energy. Temperature uses the thermal energy when the heat measures the average of the kinetic energy. The thermal energy uses the kinetic energy, when it's averged together with the kinetic enery and the others to make the thermal energy.==========================Answer #2:Wow !Temperature is to thermal energy as depth is to water.
