Balderdash means senseless, stupid, or exaggerated talk or writing; nonsense. Why it means this is pretty much unknown. The Welsh had a word baldorddus (idle noisy talk or chatter), the Dutch balderen (to roar or thunder) and the English used balderdash to describe a mixture of liquids in a frothy or beaten drink. This latter meaning took on the implication that the drink has been mixed to hide cheap ingredients or adulterants. This may be the actual source as the drink would have been a mixture of unknowns, good, bad and toxic all mixed together to give the appearance of goodness without the actual worth.
