Bartolome Ferrelo discovered Cape Mendocino in California in 1543 while exploring the west coast of North America. This discovery helped to advance the Spanish knowledge of the region's geography.
He didn't go to Spain he was from there. Born in Seville, Spain in 1484 and died in Madrid.
Portuguese were also involved in the exploration of the west coast of North America. In 1542-43, Portuguese-born João Rodrigues Cabrillo and his chief pilot Bartolomé Ferrelo, who may have been Portuguese, were the first Europeans to explore the coast of the present state of California.According to Richard Henry Dana, who wrote 'Two Years Before the Mast', "California was discovered in 1534 by Ximenes, or in 1536 by Cortes ...". Presumably he was referring to Gonzalo XimenesDe Qiesada (1509-1579), or Herman Cortes (1485-1547). Was he mistaken? The Native Americans were the first to discover California, they came thousands of years before the Europeans.
Way back when in the 1400's Spain was living peacefully, but they wanted the silk, spices, and gold Asia had. Sadly, it would take about 10 years to get there, trade your stuff, then go back home. So, they sent Columbus off in 1492 to find a quicker route by sea to Asia. He found America then sailed back to Spain to tell them. Next, Cortez sailed off in 1504 to find a route, too. He landed in Mexico though and wipped out the Aztec Indians with his Conquistadors or spanish soldiers. So, he wasn't successful in finding a route to Asia, but he did find Mexico which he called New Spain. Cabrillo though...was not the most sucessful. But he was determined to find a route to Asia for his country, Spain. There was a legend that there was a strait ( a narrow body of water) through the lands Columbos and Cortez found. They belived this strait was called Anian, but as I said this was a legend and is fake! Cabrillo landed in Mexico and travled along the western side by the coast. He called the land he found Alta California and that's how CA got it's name.He traveled a little bit father into the ocean and found islands that the Chumash and Gabrilino tribes were on. He stayed with the Native Americans ( Indians) for awhile and they became friends. Cabrillo named islands things like San miguel and Santa Catilina.( I know for a fact Catalina is still a named island, but I don't know about Miguel...) When Cabrillo was about to leave the islands to continue his journey, his soilders/crew were attacked! He died trying to save them on the island. ...it wasn't the tribes that attacked Ferrelo was on Cabrillo's crew and before Cabrillo died, he asked Ferrelo to lead if something happened to him. So, he took charge, but there was such bad weather he ended the expidition of trying to find a way to Asia by boat.
