Saint Bede (673-735), often referred to as the Venerable Bede, was an English monk who wrote some of the earliest Anglo-Saxon books, notably 'The Ecclesiastical History of the English People'. He also is said to have written a short poem just before he died, reflecting on life, death and the afterlife.
