In order to become a psychiatrist, one must achieve a doctoral degree and go through medical school. One must also undertake a certain number of supervised clinical hours and research projects (this varies in each case), and be certified to practice medicine and administer counseling in the country/ state in which they intend to practice.

You must have active listening skills, reading comprehension skills, social perceptiveness, good speaking skills, critical thinking, negotiation, complex problem solving, learning strategies, and writing. Educational background must include-4 years undergraduate, 4 years medical school, 1 year rotating internship, and 4-6 years doing a residency. In the UK you need to complete postgraduate examinations to become registered with the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
