The cache is an area of high speed memory set aside to store frequently accessed data. When data is accessed, a copy (and its address in memory) is stored in cache memory. The next time the CPU looks for information, it first checks the cache. If the data is there (called a hit), it can retrieve it from the much faster cache memory. If it is not, then it accesses system memory, puts a copy of the new data in the cache, and processes the information. Disk caching and memory caching significantly improves the overall speed of the computer but there are limits.

Short-term storage. A cache is used to speed up certain computer operations by temporarily placing data, or a copy of it, in a location where it can be accessed more rapidly than normal. For example, data from a storage disk may be cached temporarily in high-speed memory so that it can be read and written more quickly than if it had to come directly from the disk itself; or a microprocessor may use an an on-board memory cache to store temporary data for use during operations. '

A more general meaning of "cache" is any place that objects or information is stored for quick access; e.g. a cache of food.

What type of memory is mostly connected to the CPU?

In this instance, you likely mean cache memory, though you could mean RAM, particularly DRAM. Cache memory, like the L1, L2, and L3 processor cache, helps to speed up operations between the CPU and RAM.

What does it mean when a geocache has a line through it?

When a geocache has a line through it like this: geocache, this means that the cache has been archived or temporarily disabled by the cache owner (CO) or a community reviewer. When a cache has been archived or disabled, it should not be looked for.Archiving and disabling can happen for a number of reasons, such as:the cache needed maintenance and the CO is no longer active.the cache was found not to conform to geocaching community guidelinesthe CO would like to change the cache or place a different cache in the same locationthere is something happening at ground zero that restricts access to the cache

What is the difference between cache vs cold cache vs hot cache vs warm cache vs cache hit vs cache miss?

Firstly, it sounds like you are asking for general definitions, rather than differential definitions, which is problematic when the definitions are differential and context specific. Cache miss: not in cache, must be loaded from the original source Cache hit: was loaded from cache (no implication of what "type" of cache was hit). cold cache: The slowest cache hit possible. The actual loading mechanism depends on the type of cache (CPU cache could refer to an L2 (or L3) hit, disk cache could refer to a RAM hit on the drive, web cache could refer to a drive cache hit) hot cache: The fastest cache hit possible. Depends on mechanism described (CPU could be L1 cache, disk could be OS cache hit, web cache could be RAM hit in cache device) Warm cache: Anything between, like L2 when L1 is hot and L3 is cold. It is a less precise term and often used to imply "hot" when the performance is closer to "cold."
