Chiang Kai-shek ordered the Shanghai massacre that came close to wiping out the Chinese communists. Chiang Kai-shek, also known as Jiang Jieshi, was in office from October 10, 1928 to December 15, 1931.
Jiang Jieshi (Chaing Kai-Shek) escaped to the island of Taiwan with some of his remaining forces and established the Republic of China. Chiang died in 1975, and the authoritarian rule of the island gradually became more democratic.
