Answer 2.com = Commercial. This was originally supposed to be for multinational commercial companies. But as registration was done first-come first-served. There are many local companies with a ".com" URL.
.org = Organisation. Usually non profit making organisations. Like .com, this was originally supposed to be for multinational commercial companies, but many single-country organisations use .org.
.gov = US government.
.edu = education. New registrations are restricted to educational institutions in the US, though there are some non-US educational institutions which registered a .edu URL before this restrictiona came in.
Three letter codes are supposed to be international. Two letter codes are countries, so it should be .gov.us and .edu.us, same as it is .gov.uk and .edu.uk, but I don't know if this anomaly will ever be fixed.
