Any comet visible from earth is in orbit around the sun.

If the orbit is closed (elliptical), the comet will return after some period of time. If the orbit is open

(parabolic or hyperbolic), the comet will escape the solar system and never return to the neighborhood.

What Santa reindeer share its name with a small solar system body?

comet

Why is the solar system name its name?

Everything in our star system orbits the sun. The Sun's name is, "Sol". Therefore, its system is called the Sol-ar or simply Solar system. If our Sun was named Fred, it would be called the "Freddar" system, or something similar.

What is the name of the oldest comet?

Anywhere from "millions of years or more" to "just until the next time they approach the Sun" (or hit something, like Comet Shoemaker Levy 9 did Jupiter in 1994). Some comets making their first approach to the Sun (presumably after a gravitational encounter in the outer solar system) come too close and are destroyed. Most familiar comets like Halley's Comet can be expected to "live" millions of years into the future as they have relatively stable orbits and do not come too close to the Sun.

How did hale-bopp get its name?

Comets such as this are in long drawn out eccentric orbits around the sun. It is likely that this comet was once in a slow distant orbit around the sun, on the edge of our solar system around the orbit distance of Pluto, or further. It may then have been knocked into it's current orbit through a collision with another object.

Name solar system bodies that have orbits?

All bodies in the solar system have orbits (go around the sun in some way). Some have nice oval orbits like the 8 planets,; # Mercury # Venus # Earth # Mars # Jupiter # Saturn # Uranus # Neptune The outer dwarf planets tend to have larger, less circular orbits. Pluto Haumea, Makemake, Eris. And then there's the asteroid belts, And finally comets that go very far away and come back after hundreds of years. hope this helps

Name the comet that have visited the solar system?

well, there are over 5 comets that have crossed the lines to the earth's orbit to the sun. So the Haley's comet must have crossed the solar system a thousand times.

What is the system that revolves around the sun?

First, the name of our star or sun is "Sol", Hence, the Sol-ar or Solar system. The Solar system orbits Sol, or the sun.

Is there a comet belt?

You might think of the proposed Oort Cloud as a sort of "comet belt". Jan Oort's theory is that all comets will exhaust their volatile mass and fall apart or collide with a planet. The solar system has been in existence for 4.5 billion years, and no comet could possibly survive so long. And yet we still see comets! Oort proposed a "cloud" of cometary material in very distant orbits far beyond the orbits of Neptune. Occasional near collisions or interactions with other objects might disturb some objects by their mutual gravitational attraction, and periodically a object would fall into the inner solar system as a comet. There was even a theory that there might be a large unknown planet out there somewhere, which would somehow fling large numbers of cometary bodies like birdshot into the inner solar system. The name of the proposed planet was to be "Nemesis".

What was the name of a comet that was predicted to return?

There are scores of comets who's orbits have been determined, and are predicted to return, but the best known one is probably Comet Halley.
