Used as a present participle of a verb, 'crating' generally refers to containerizing for the purpose of transporting. Crating is commonly used to reference the caging of a pet for the purpose of providing a small and defensible comfort zone, or for the purpose of transport. More generally, the term refers to the containerization of cargo for transportation or storage within a sturdy, self-supporting structure. Typically made mostly or completely out of manufactured and natural wood products, crates may also be constructed out of plastic or metal material. The process of crating is not to say that the cargo which is containerized is so done within a crate. Often cargo is packed in a wood box yet the process is still known as crating.

There are approximately 150 variations of commercially acceptable variations of container construction that are used for cargo crating What constitutes a properly constructed container used for cargo transportation is determined by standards defined by and within Crate Pro software in 2002 and now maintained by the Wooden Crates Organization. Fewer standards have been defined by the US Department of Agriculture in the 1920s then later by various US government organizations. ASTM International is now the largest standards organization that publishes standards determining what constitutes the action of crating although they only maintain such standards for approximately 20 different styles.
