In terms of Christianity, different relgions take their beliefs and authority directly from The Bible, some interpreting the Bible more strictly than others. Customs and traditions are added beliefs built on top of Biblical authority. A very good example of this is the Roman Catholic Church who believe that the added ceremonials, rituals and quite often historically unfounded beliefs and practices accrued over the centuries are of equal authority to the Scriptures. For that Church, this system of added beliefs is called their "Magesterium" and is adhered to in tandem with the Bible.
