Best Answer

As a unit, dag is decagrams

The 'da' is the metric prefix for deca- (also spelt deka-) which means ten (10).

The 'g' is grams

So 1 dag = 1 decagram = 10 grams.

----------------

The metric prefixes are:

M = mega meaning 1,000,000, eg 1 Mm = 1 megametre = 1,000,000 m (a million metres)

k = kilo meaning 1000, eg 1 km = 1 kilometre = 1000 m

h = hecto- meaning 100, eg 1 hm = 1 hetometre = 100 m

da = deca- meaning 10, eg 1 dam = 1 decametre = 10 m

d = deci- meaning 1/10 = 0.1, eg 1 dm = 1 decimetre = 0.1 m

c = centi- meaning 1/100 = 0.01, eg 1 cm = 1 centimetre = 0.01 m

m = milli- meaning 1/1000 = 0.001, eg 1 mm = 1 millimetre = 0.001 m

µ = micro- meaning 1/1,000,000 = 0.000001, eg 1 µm = 1 micrometre = 0.000001 m

The most common prefixes with units are:

1 kg = 1 kilogram

1 km = 1 kilometre

1 ha = 1 hectare = 100 are = 10,000 sq m - the metric unit of area taking over from the acre; the are (= 100 sq m) is not used, only hectares.

1 cm = 1 centimetre

1 cl = 1 centilitre (often on bottles of water or usually on bottles of wine)

1 mm = 1 millimetre

1 mg = 1 milligram

1 µg = 1 microgram

The metric ton (ie tonne) is 1Mg:

1 Mg = 1 Megagram = 1,000,000 g = 1000 × 1000 g = 1000 kg = 1 tonne.

1 m³ = 1 kl = 1 kilolitre = 1000 litres.
