What does damosel mean?

It is a variant spelling of Damsel, a young, unmarried woman, a girl. We are familiar with the phrase ( Damsel in Distress) The Blessed Damosel is a poem by Christina G. Rossetti. I am not sure if the poem is about Joan of Arc, or somebody else. it probably is not about St. Mary as she is usually referred to as the Blessed Mother- and in Medieval orientation, a (Damsel) could not be a Mother. a Madame, yes. Mademoiselle is the modern French equivalent, meaning Miss. Curiously there is no idiomatic French word meaning just ( Girl) there is Jeune Fille- lit. Young Girl, Mademoiselle, and Madame also Femme ( woman) and Dame, but not neat little monosylabbic handle for (Girl).
