It kind of means 'is'.

Like, let's say you were saying 'this is sushi', you say 'sushi desu'.

If you just said 'sushi'... well, you'd just be saying sushi.

I am cold = samui desu [samui - cold]

This is the post office = Yubin kyoku desu [yubin kyoku - post office]

This is me = watashi desu [watashi - I/me/myself]

Basically it means "to be" or "is".

But their sentence structure is different so it's at the end of the sentence.

eg

That's a cat.

=sore WA neko desu

[that] [(sentence particle)] [cat] desu

What animal is that?

It's a cat = neko desu

What's your name? (anata no namae WA?)

Bob desu (it's Bob)
