The shape of the epidermal cells are bricked shaped and has no intercellular spaces. the thick outer cellular walls contain cellulose and pectin which provides protection.

Epidermal cells are transparent and contains chloroplast.

The epidermis allows sunlight to reach tissues deeper in the plant espescially the leaves and the stem, it protects softer tissues in the plant from mechanical injury.
