Rust is so costly because it spreads fast and and is hard to get rid of. Only a few drops of water left on metal can create rust so it appears quickly and is hard work to make is disappear again.
Wrought iron will like most irons rust unless it is properly maintained for, by this i mean keep a fresh coat of paint on it, preferrably a "Rustoleum" type and every few years wire brush any rust spots and repaint the entire surface on a nice dry day to keep it rust free.

Clean very well and then apply paint a self etching primer and a few layers of paint and touch up every few months with some more paint. Paint and wash regularly.
Yes. They can damage your eyesight. I wouldnt wear them if I wear you. Its okay to wear them for, say..Halloween. But I would not wear them all day, everyday. Or for more than a few hours.(: Glad I could help.
