For the Best.

-------

Suppose someone has just had a minor accident in his car in which no-one was hurt, however the car was damaged beyond repair. A friend points out to the person who has just lost his car that the accident happened because its brakes failed and that in fact the car was unsafe in various other ways too and should have been replaced.

Then either the person who lost the car or the friend might say, "It's for the better." This would mean that, although the car was lost the accident forced its owner to quit driving a dangerous vehicle. He's better off.
