In a sentence, "The car was formally owned by a judge"; it means "beforehand". However, "He was initiated formally into the group"; here, it means "officially". There is some confusion here between the words formally & formerly.... Formally does Not mean beforehand. Formerly does.

Formaly is an adjective that desribes somthing of how it was done. It was done in a formal mannor. Formal means that is is very fancey, good mannors should be in mind at a formal meeting. Formal is is opposite of casual.
