You have a significant intervertebral disc herniation/ rupture to the side (laterally) and into the intervertebral foramen, which is the hole between those two vertebra where the C8 nerve exits the spinal cord. Likely you have pain runnig down the back of the arm with numbness into the 4th and 5th fingers. See a chiropractor or physical therapist who has spinal decompression unit, otherwise you will need surgery. Neurosurgeons do a miscrodiscectomy with better results than a fusion by an orthopedist.
A disc herniation can be serious because it can cause severe pain and loss of feeling in your arms and legs. This kind of herniation basically means the rubbery cushion between the bones has moved out of its proper place.
iliac refers to your hip. so if you're moving distally (away from the thorax down the limb) and laterally (away from the midline) and the pain is in your right leg, then you would be on the outside of your right thigh. however, if you're on your right side and moving "to the left" you are moving medially, not laterally. hope this helped?
