A "freethinking" person or group is a person or group with a flexible outlook on life, people that tend to question received values and ideas, often coming up with new ones of their own.
Freethinking is defined as a rejection of accepted opinions, especially those concerning religious beliefs - rejecting them because they were 'accepted' without questioning them. The word 'free' meant that those who practiced it were using their own reasoning to think about life and the universe and our place in it, and not just blindly accepting the dogma of organised religion(s).
