Gatsby's friendship with Meyer Wolfshiem implies that Gatsby likely has ties to the criminal underworld or engaged in illegal activities to amass his wealth. Wolfshiem is portrayed as a shady character involved in organized crime, suggesting that Gatsby may have taken similar routes to achieve his status. The story that Gatsby tells Nick about Mr. Wolfsheim is that he is the man that fixed the World Series during 1919. Now he also explains that Mr. Wolfsheim is quite a gambler plus also quite smart, this then explains why he was able to get away with it and not have gotten caught or gone to jail.

The whole fixed the World Series is a big scandal that happen in the World Series of 1919, when the Black Sox, now known as the White Sox, decided to fixed the game. The decided that they would lose to the Cincinnati Reds on purpose so that the people they planned it with would win the bets and they would get rich (hence why Fitzgerald put Mr. Wolfsheim as the mastermind behind it all.)

This friendship implies that Gatsby used some not-so-honorable means to attain his wealth (bootlegging). The owning of drug stores that is so often mentioned in the book is a reference to getting alcohol which during the prohibition, was illegal. A drug store could get you a prescription for it, whether legal or not.
